The Bike Shed Book the bench

Church Street, Woodbridge

Every bike in here is on show until somebody rides it out.

Thirty-one bikes on the floor at Church Street and a workshop bench behind them. Both are on this page.

Five miles from the door to the Rendlesham gravel.

Test rides go out Tuesday to Saturday. Leave a card behind the counter, take anything off the floor, and bring it back muddy. We would rather you found out on the sand than in the shop.

The Bench

One bench, two mechanics and a diary anyone can read. Pick the work, pick the day, and we will tell you the hour it goes back on the floor. Parts get quoted before we fit them, never after.

1

What needs doing

Not sure which one? Bring it in and we will put it on the stand for nothing.

2

Which day

Closed Sunday and Monday
3

What time it comes in

Struck-through means taken

Pick a day first.

4

Who to call

The workshop at dusk: a wheel in the truing stand, spanners hung in order on the pegboard

Who does the work

Ross has been building wheels since he was seventeen and still laces every one on the same stand his old boss left him. Nell came here from a frame builder in Bristol and takes anything with a bottom bracket that sounds wrong.

Between them they see about forty bikes a week. They will also tell you when something is not worth fixing, which is the part most shops leave out.

The Mud Index

Ross rides these three on a Thursday and writes down what he finds. Accurate until it rains, which around here buys you about a day.

Deben Wall to Kyson Point

6 miles · Saltmarsh path and shingle · Flat, and it lies to you about the wind

Thursday reading Claggy

Rendlesham Forest loop

14 miles · Sand and forest gravel · Drains almost as fast as it fills

Thursday reading Fast

Sutton Hoo to Shottisham

11 miles · Lanes and one byway · The byway is where it goes wrong

Thursday reading Puddled

Baked Fast Puddled Claggy Underwater

Church Street, behind the Tide Mill

Two minutes from the station and about ninety seconds from the quay. There is a rack outside and a kettle inside. If the shutter is down and the light is on, knock, because that means Ross is building a wheel and lost track.
